LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms or a landing page: what one campaign's numbers show

When the ad click never loads the page, the native form captures the lead. What a campaign for one of our clients showed and when a landing page still wins.

LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms capture the lead inside the platform, without sending people to your website. When the ad click never gets as far as loading the page, the native form is the difference between getting a contact and paying for a visit that never happened. Landing pages still win in some cases, and the way to choose lies in what happens after the click.

The click that never becomes a visit

Between the ad click and the loaded page, some people drop off, and on LinkedIn that loss tends to be large. On mobile, the link opens inside the app, and a heavy page loses people before they see the first headline.

At one of our clients, the analysis of a LinkedIn campaign showed exactly that. Most link clicks never got as far as loading the page. The share of budget running with native forms brought in all of the campaign's leads, while the rest, sending people to the site, paid for clicks without generating a single lead. The recommendation was to move every piece of gated content on the channel to native forms.

To measure this loss in your own account, compare link clicks in Campaign Manager with the campaign's sessions in analytics, filtered by UTM. If the gap is large, the problem comes before the page, and no landing page form fix will solve it.

How LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms work

The form opens on top of the ad, already filled in with profile data, and people submit it in a couple of taps. According to the official LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms page, fields come pre-filled with name, contact details, company, seniority and job title, and leads can go straight to your marketing automation tool or CRM.

When you set it up, you choose:

  • which profile fields go into the form;
  • your own questions, multiple choice or short text;
  • hidden fields, to carry the campaign and content details into the CRM;
  • the thank-you message and the link shown after submission.

Results live in Campaign Manager, with cost per lead and form fill rate. They do not show up as sessions in your website analytics, because people never go through the site, so your reporting has to bring the two sources together.

Document ads with a form: the format that performed best

A document ad shows the first pages of a piece of content and asks for the form to unlock the rest. The Document Ads page describes this choice: share the content freely or trade access for lead information.

At the same client, the document ad with a native form had the lowest cost per lead in the account. People see a real sample of the content before deciding, without leaving the feed, and reach the form knowing what they will get. For this to work, the open pages must deliver value on their own and make clear what comes next. A lead magnet designed for the channel is built with that split from the start.

Pre-filled leads: how to qualify them

A pre-filled form makes submitting easy, which is why qualification needs extra care. Since submitting takes only a few taps, the lead needs context and a fast follow-up. Four adjustments go a long way:

  1. One qualifying question. Company size, project stage or area of interest, as a closed list, to separate the right profiles.
  2. Fast follow-up. The first contact from sales or email should go out the same day, while people still remember the ad.
  3. Ad targeting. On LinkedIn, the main filter is who sees the ad: the job titles, industries and company sizes set in the campaign.
  4. Work email. The profile often carries a personal email. If sales needs the corporate one, add the work email field.

From LinkedIn to your CRM and RD Station

A lead sitting in Campaign Manager goes cold before anyone downloads the spreadsheet. Connect the form to your CRM or marketing automation before launching the campaign. If you use RD Station Marketing, RD itself lists an integration with LinkedIn lead forms, built by Zapier.

Test the path with a real submission, check that the hidden fields came through and tag the lead source. Without that, your cost per lead by campaign mixes leads from native forms with leads from the site.

When the landing page wins

A landing page is worth the lost clicks when conversion depends on something only the page can do.

Situation Best path
Lead magnet, guide or document native form, ideally in a document ad
Webinar registration native form, with an email reminder
Quiz or interactive assessment landing page, as in a lead generation quiz
Long-form content, comparison or demo landing page, which explains before it asks
Audiences you will reach on other channels landing page, so visitors enter your site's remarketing audiences

In the same analysis, for time-bound topics, asking for a sales conversation right away was expensive and brought little, while starting with a webinar and a lead magnet brought more people at a lower cost. The recommended sequence became: webinar, a lead magnet for attendees and, last, the direct offer.

Reviews like this are part of our paid media work, which tracks where each channel's budget goes and where every click lands.

Frequently asked questions

Do LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms bring lower-quality leads?

They bring easier leads, and quality depends on targeting and the qualifying question. Compare the opportunity rate of native leads with that of site leads before drawing conclusions.

Can I use native forms and a landing page in the same campaign?

Yes, in separate ads. That way you compare cost per lead and quality with the same audience and the same offer.

Do native forms work in message ads?

Yes. The official LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms page lists message ads and sponsored content as formats that support the form.
